Product Overview
Penetration Bitumen 10/20
Penetration Bitumen 10/20 is a hard grade bitumen. This category of bitumen is generally used as a paving type in pavements.
It can also be used in road construction, repairing and producing an asphalt mixture for coating and sealing operations.
In general, bitumen is manufactured from a special material called vacuum bottom which is transferred through hot air.
Also, it can be produced from refined crude oil after cracking and removing hydrocarbons.
Technical Properties
Penetration Bitumen grades are named according to the penetration degree of the needle into the bitumen. According to this information, Penetration Bitumen 10/20 has a penetration grade between 10 and 20 desi-millimeters; also, its softening point is in the range of 58 to 60 °C. Moreover, it should be mentioned that all grades of this category have thermoplastic properties, the same as synthetic resin materials, which get softer by heating up and become more complicated by heating down.
Applications
The primary purpose of using this grade is to combine it with the hot asphalt mixture in asphalt production plants. This grade is used in bases, coating patches and routes, pavements, road construction and repair operations. Moreover, it can save costs and materials used more than 30 percent compared to traditional methods.
Hazards and Handling
The main hazards presented by Asphalt relate to the temperature of the material. If the asphalt material is hot, it may burn the skin.
Hot Asphalt may release fumes that are not hazardous in open air situations, but continuous inhalation of high vapor concentrations in poorly ventilated, closed or semi-closed areas may cause health risks.
Although asphalt is not normally a dusty material, dust may be released during drilling, cutting or shoving hardened asphalt. If it is inhaled in excessive amounts over an extended period, dust can constitute a health hazard.
Inhalation of fumes should be avoided as far as is reasonably practicable. Skin contact with the hot product may cause burning of the skin, therefore should be avoided. If there is a risk of vapor formation, then additional ventilation should be maintained.
Asphalt should be handled away from sources of ignition and heat. Smoking, eating or drinking during its use should be avoided.
Storage
No special requirements. Asphalt is normally used upon receipt. Refer to the relevant Technical Data Sheet for the specific product. Packing New Steel Drum, Jumbo Bag, Bulk.
